Dear Captain Bates, Have reread Heart of Darkness and strongly feel that the book is well into dark and depressing territory. Respectfully ask you now — not to require the members of your squad to read it.
Austen is an essential author in any library, especially to those serving in the armed forces. Find it is best to read Sense and Sensibility in the early spring. The story of two sisters Eleanor and Maryanne with different personalities — one very calm and centered and the other more dreamy and romantic along with their mother and very much younger sister — cast out from the only home they have ever known after their father’s death, and at their callow brother’s hand with a lot of input from his insidious wife to a small cottage on the estate of a kindly cousin. Phew. Follies turn into mishaps then the misdeeds that turn around yet again, and give you hope. Much like that rising of spring after a dreary winter that seems never-ending.
Best regards, Ms. Anise
